vehicles parked in bike lane
Make side roads pedestrian/bike only and add more plants and trees similar to 34th ave open streets.
Turn the side roads into linear parks with bike paths running through them.
There should be park benches, bike racks, citibike docking stations, and other public art or trees/shrubs planted to dissuade illegal parking on the existing medians. Currently there is rampant illegal parking (including much placard abuse) by drivers who leave their cars all the time and overnight on the brand new medians that were just installed. When I have tried to walk along the beautiful new median, I can't because there's a car parked on it. What a waste! Please install some useful things on the median or put up a higher curb so that drivers can't use it for illegal car storage.
If you're going with bicycle lanes on the outside of the sidewalk adjacent lanes, please at least install tuff curbs or flex post. The slightly elevated bike lanes with the mountable curbs are always violated by cars around Times Sq.
These medians are inaccessible and unwelcoming. This could be extra sidewalk space instead.
We want big sidewalks with trees and seating. Places where people can relax. The medians are inaccessible and uninviting. Raised medians would be no better. Remove the medians, expand the sidewalks, add curbside bike lanes protected by a raised curb, cut the number of general traffic lanes and add center running bus lanes.
Consider adding center running bus lanes to the Grand Concourse. Eliminate the service roads and medians, allow for only two general traffic lanes and curb side bike lanes on expanded sidewalks. Center running bus lanes will not get stuck behind turning or double parked cars. Most people who live on or near the GC do not drive, and most business serve the population within walking distance. In the future, perhaps the bus only lanes could become part of a streetcar route, with grass alongside the tracks.
The sidewalks are vibrant with street life, but could be better. Expand the sidewalks throughout the Grand Concourse, allowing additional space for seating, beautification and recreation. No one hangs out on the inaccessible medians, they are just necessary safe havens when crossing the street. Reduce the street width (remove lanes), expand the sidewalks, and place "people space" near the places people want to be, like the buildings themselves.
