As a New Yorker and someone who actually walks, bikes, and takes transit, I have one real question: Who even designed this corridor? Conduit Avenue is a nightmare of 1950s car-centric thinking that treats neighborhoods as afterthoughts and people as obstacles to traffic flow. It’s dangerous, loud, and cuts off East New York and Ozone Park from basic access and connectivity. The current redesign does nothing to fix the core issue: it’s built like a freeway through a community. Where are the bus lanes? Where are the protected bike lanes that connect to anything? Why does this corridor still look like it was built for Robert Moses’ dream of infinite car throughput instead of real safety, mobility, and equity? If NYC DOT is serious about Vision Zero and climate action, Conduit should be deconduited—turned back into a livable boulevard, not a high-speed bypass. This isn’t just bad design. It’s a complete failure to prioritize people over cars.
