21st Street in general is a nightmare to drive down. There are two lanes and parking in each direction, but this creates a whack-a-mole situation where people are double parked on the right, and cars are trying to turn left on the left, so as a driver you are constantly weaving in and out of lanes. At the rare times when it is clear, people speed like crazy. Perhaps planning what types of turns are allowed where, and perhaps adding signals for them, and somehow enforcing double parking prohibitions would be good for this street.
This is just one location, but I think throughout 21st Street are opportunities for more street trees, planters, and benches. As it stands, it's not enjoyable to be on the block; with reduced traffic and faster buses, the street can be made more of a destination, which would drive business footfall.
The entire stretch of 21st st is completely unsafe for pedestrians and bikers. Traffic calming, bus lanes, and bike lanes much needed
Flagrant double parking on 21st street regularly disrupts bus traffic (all traffic, really). I would like to see dedicated double parking enforcement during rush hours. I understand that certain official vehicles must double park when necessary but I often find that the double parked cars could have easily stopped at a hydrant or around the corner on one of the avenues.
Lots of double parking from car repair shops that interrupt traffic flow.
Cars moving in and out of car repair shops often block ongoing traffic and can be hazardous
Lots of aggressive drivers on 21st Street in general. Also, lots of double-parked cars, even during rush between 34th avenue and the bridge in both directions (mostly sanitation department for area near 34th avenue) and this leads to traffic congestion and aggressive driving.
Having 23rd between Hoyt S and Hoyt N causes issues because, with two sides of parking, you can not move two lanes of traffic without one backing up letting the other through. Combined with the intersection blocked, this area becomes impassable and dangerous to pedestrians crossing.
When the traffic is backed up between Hoyt N and S on 21st st, it creates a blocked intersection at 23rd and Hoyt N.
I love on 30th and 21st so take the bus to catch the F train. The bus is slowed down so much by other traffic when having to merge after the stops. Also, double parking often is a problem too. A separated, dedicated and protected busway would be huge for this st as it would then make connecting to the subways at queensboro plaza much, much easier and faster
