Many of the car repair shops along 21st St block the sidewalk forcing pedestrians to walk in the street. Besides the cars blocking the sidewalk for large lengths of the block, noxious fumes are emitted by many of them further endangering pedestrians walking along the street.
There is a general problem of double parking by delivery trucks delivering to businesses and taxis parking on both the street and sidewalk in front of the hotel. Taxis on the sidewalk block pedestrian traffic.
In addition to center-running bus lanes which would be the #1 preferred option for speeding up bus service, DOT should implement a crosswalk in this area somewhere between Broadway and 34th Ave since there are inadequate crosswalks. If signalizing the crossing would make it too inefficient, at the very least there should be ped islands with raised crossing or crosswalks with low grade speed bumps approaching to calm traffic, with clear signage requiring yielding to pedestrians. Normally cars tend to speed along this stretch and it is very dangerous to attempt crossing here.
Please can we stop cyclists from riding on the sidewalk? I am a senior and every day people ride on the sidewalks. Not only is it against the law it is so dangerous. Many seniors are on medications. Some of which can be the cause of their death. I myself am on blood thinners. If I was to be hit by a car or bike it would mean instant death. The DOT gives cars tickets every day, why not give tickets to cyclists who not only ride on the sidewalks but ignore traffic laws. I almost got hit by a bike that was supposed to stop on a red light and instead just kept going missing me by a hair. My neighbors who live at North Queensview Homes on 21st street have the same grievances. Please help citizens of Queens who need safer streets for all. P. Weiss
All parking should be removed from both sides of 21st St for the portion between the RFK Bridge and Queensboro Bridge. The areas near the curb should be designated as loading/unloading zones, to help cut down on double parking by delivery services (UPS/FedEx/food delivery/etc).
Drivers regularly speed through here in an attempt to get through the light.
The repair shops along the other side of the road treat this as long-term parking for cars they are working on. They block sidewalk curb cuts.
Punjab allows their customers to park on the sidewalk. When done, the customers drive along the sidewalk (towards the laundromat, especially) rather than using Punjab's driveway to re-enter 21st St.
Just about every day I see drivers go through the light after it has changed to red. Drivers treat the "pedestrian head start" period as a chance to go through the red light before other drivers start going through the intersection.
Buses get stuck in traffic all the time, but especially in the morning and evening rush hours. Buses bunch up and there are too many local stops on the Q69. There is a need for bus lanes to accommodate all bus routes, consolidation of bus stops, more bus shelters, extended curbs at crosswalks, and bus priority at street lights. Center bus lanes would be great if congestion pricing is implemented in Manhattan as a lot of traffic comes from drivers avoiding tolls on Triboro Bridge and driving to Queensboro Bridge.
