crossing the street here to get to DiMattia dog park is treacherous.
Its unfortunate that there is no waterfront Greenspace anywhere near here
Some days multiple trucks trying to access the freight facility with entrance near Union St are backed up and blocking one lane on VanBrunt. On some days I have seen up to 5 trucks all waiting. I have seen the FDNY maintenance trucks use the bike lane to bypass the congestion. Sometimes empty trailers are dropped off and sitting near this area.
Biking on the Columbia St Greenway is awesome! So much faster than a car. I use it daily and it is the best way to get around if you don't have to carry many objects or people.
Over length freight trucks are frequently sitting here waiting to get to the freight depot/beverage distribution gate. This blocks right turn lane from Atlantic to Furman, or Blocks one Left turn lane from Atlantic to Columbia. It also blocks sight lines for traffic to see pedestrians and cyclists.
Traffic frequently backs up on Columbia St because of the lane closure on BQE cantilever. Local traffic can not pass the congestion.
This area is depressing and dangerous for pedestrians. Honestly the whole highway should be demolished and reconsidered as a greenway or avenue.
Biking anywhere near the BQE in Sunset Park is a death trap. Loud cars, extremely fast, too many lanes of traffic, auto shops everywhere. This area desperately needs safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists. I would like for the elevated BQE to go away entirely so that the neighborhood is quieter and safer.
I lived beside this area for 3 years and I served as a poll worker at Joseph Miccio Community Center in Red Hook. This area is congested, loud, and inaccessible for pedestrians. There are multiple pedestrian lights that are poorly-timed and do not leave enough time to cross the wide roads beneath the BQE. This is especially challenging if you are a disabled person who uses a wheelchair or walker to navigate and the pedestrian inaccessibility of this area in particular probably prevents certain people from voting at the community center. The entire area beneath the BQE is a miserable place to be as a pedestrian and I would like to see the BQE removed entirely and the neighborhoods of Red Hook and Carrol Gardens stitched back together. The cars and congestion cause health problems, pollution, and noise.
Access to the BQE/Gowanus South bound ramp at Prospect Ave. Photo enforce lanes regulations at the interception of Prospect & 3rd Avenues. Vehicles on lanes other than the one with signage to proceed to BQE/Gowanus South bound ramp cut in at the interception once light turns green and thus creating a dangerous traffic congestion.
