The sidewalk is narrow and insufficiently sized for the amount of pedestrian traffic on the street. With the street vendors on one side, and bikes also sometimes incorrectly trying to ride on the sidewalk here too, it would help to have wider sidewalks and dedicated, clear bike lanes.
Canal St needs protected bike lanes in both directions from West St to the Manhattan Bridge.
Traffic Enforcement Agents routinely direct drivers to block crosswalks. Intersection is complex, busy, and dangerous for walking or biking.
A bike lane on Canal is direly needed. Getting to the area between Canal and Spring St from lower manhattan is very challenging, as there are few bike lanes and few ways to get from the Hudson River Greenway into the area.
It is very dangerous to cross this intersection as both a pedestrian and biker, crossing south both to continue walking down Varick St. Cars are turn into the crosswalk and bike markings at a very narrow angle, and so when going through the crosswalk you it is impossible to look at incoming traffic, unless you look behind your back. It doesn't help that at around 6pm, when I get off work, there are almost always cars blocking the crosswalk.
It is extremely difficult to cross Canal Street on a bicycle at this intersection (going north-bound on 6th Ave). 6th Ave has bike lanes/markings that end abruptly at this point, and most cars go through this intersection at high speed. Even though I immediately ride out of the intersection to get to the citibike station on the northwest corner of the intersection, this is always the most dangerous part of my commute to work. Almost every time I bike through this intersection, I get honked at by aggressive drivers who pass me dangerously close and fast.
Protected bike lane is absolutely necessary. It cannot be just pain, it has to be protected.
All Canal street is tough to navigate by bike! Very scary with all the trucks, streets coming in at odd angles, and potholes. Please add a bikelane to facilitate safe x-town biking
A protected bike lane on Canal would be incredibly helpful.
Protected bike lane please!
