I am concerned about the lack of transparency ànd bypassing the communities that are affected. Removing the buses from two streets impacts the seniors and those who are disabled. The bikes can also be dangerous to pedestrians and are unregulated.
I am against this. I am speaking today as both a cyclist and a driver. I regularly ride between 10 and 30 miles throughout Brooklyn, including Bergen Street and Dean Street. I also drive these same streets, so I understand the needs of everyone who uses them. Based on my personal experience over the past seven years, I have ridden these corridors without being involved in an accident. Bergen and Dean already function as shared streets where cyclists and motorists coexist. They are not perfect, but they demonstrate that different modes of transportation can safely share the roadway. In a city as dense as New York, every street must balance multiple needs. The question should not be whether we can make cycling safer—we all support safety—but whether converting these blocks into bike boulevards is the best use of limited street space. Removing parking has real consequences. Many homeowners and residents rely on street parking, and reducing parking shifts the burden onto surrounding blocks, making it harder for residents, visitors, caregivers, contractors, and deliveries. Those impacts should be carefully weighed against the measurable safety benefits of this proposal.
I support the Dean St and Bergen St bike boulevards. These are critical bike and pedestrian paths for the Brooklyn area. They should be made fully safe, comfortable, and even fun for non-car traffic and people.
I support the bike boulevards. It seems reasonable to have two streets that prioritize bikes out of the approximately 32,000 others that prioritize cars.
It’s insane that this intersection is not a four way stop or a light. The daylighting was a good thought but cars park in the daylight zone and there’s no enforcement so it’s no change. Cars speed down grand to catch the light at Atlantic, sight lines for vehicles on Lefferts are terrible in either direction looking toward north on grand, and pedestrians never know when it’s safe to cross. I saw a woman with a stroller nearly get clipped just 3 days ago by an SUV speeding down Grand.

I take the Bergen/Dean bike lanes 2x per day to take my kids to schools, sometimes 4x per day if I’m running lunchtime errands. When clear of cars they’re fabulous transverses, but they’re constantly blocked by delivery vehicles and double parked cars. The cars and trucks in front of the semi industrials sites between Franklin and grand are particularly bad. Something better than paint will protect me and my kids and every pedestrian and cyclist in the area.
This section of Dean is a circus, all the vehicles and bikes turning from Boerum Place. For hire vehicles camp out, cyclists fly by and past each other, cars back up at the light and honk. Not sure how to reroute, but that would be nice. Whatever is done, please don’t turn it into Court Street. The redesign there is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. A street that worked is now non-functional, with the protected bike lane a race way, cars unable to see bikes when turning left, traffic lane blocked constantly by deliveries and double parkers, traffic, idling, noise, honking, e-bikes going 30mph, pedestrian crossing more precarious than it ever has been. Someone from this church always illegally parks their giant SUV on the south side of the sidewalk alongside a few illegally parked trucks.
