Dean & Bergen Streets
I am very much AGAINST discountinuing the B65 service on Dean Street and Bergen Street west of Washington Avenue.
We need safe streets and sidewalks for pedestrians, as well as public transportation and safe access to boarding vehicles. Providing safe streets for bicycles without concern for pedestrians is extremely negligent. The current DOT representatives clearly lack NYC experience.
It often feels like Bergen and Dean don’t have a bike lane because of how many cars are double parked. A bike boulevard should have parking protected lanes (that also deter people from parking in the protected bike lane) - ideally it should be primarily bikes and buses going down dean and Bergen. As someone that takes this route every single day. I’m excited for changes.
Visibility along this stretch is a concern for cyclists, especially during bright sunlight, since there is currently no tree canopy. The area was previously a parking lot, but it is now fully residential. Adding street trees would improve shade, reduce glare, and enhance safety and overall comfort for everyone using the street.
The intersections along 4th Avenue have become increasingly hazardous for bikers due to overflowing trash, illegal dumping, and persistent littering. I frequently encounter debris in the middle of the street while biking, which forces me to swerve to avoid it and creates unnecessary safety risks for cyclists alike.
The bike lane on Dean from Flatbush to Vanderbilt frequently has cars illegally double parked in the bike lane. Combined with aggressive drivers, this is really dangerous! Thank you for doing this project.
southbound on 4th ave between Flatbush and Bergen we lose the protected lane. I hope as part of this project, you consider adding protection to the southbound lane on 4th ave to better connect to Bergen and Dean

This is a general comment that we've lived in this area for years and really love the idea of more bike boulevards for our family. My husband bikes to work every day.
Please look carefully at the results of the 2025 Court St protected bike line as you consider this project. I bike and walk on Court St every day and have very mixed feelings about the changes. Cars at non-signal intersections turn semi-blindly across bike lanes. Pedestrians pay less attention once they've crossed the vehicle lane and then walk into the bike lane without looking. I often feel less safe on my bike than I did riding on the old unprotected bike lane. The vehicular traffic backup on Court St and the narrow streets that feed into Court St is often terrible to the point of gridlock and I regularly see ambulances and fire trucks unable to move for multiple traffic light cycles. As you add bike boulevards to the network I worry there could be a tipping point where at certain times of day gridlock could expand and whole areas become virtually impassible for the angry honking vehicles. I am in favor of promoting safety of us pedestrians and bikers but please be thoughtful about how best to do this, over time, while allowing for the reality that vehicular movement is necessary for many daily needs and for emergencies.
