Drivers daily blow through this red light and block the box as cars line up waiting for the light to change on Ocean Avenue. They've hit the gas to get in front of me both when I'm on my bike and have a green light and when I'm a pedestrian already in the crosswalk with a walk sign. One time I saw a kid jump out of truck's way as it ran a red light. Another time, I saw a car blow through a red light in front of a cop car — who did nothing. It's dangerous and infuriating.

Make Caton eastbound-only for general traffic as part of a Church/Caton one-way pair. Simplifying movements at this complicated diagonal intersection could reduce turning conflicts and make traffic behavior much more predictable.

This could be the eastern transition for a Caton eastbound and Church westbound one-way pair. Redesign the Caton, Linden, Bedford junction around clear directional movements rather than letting every movement compete with every other movement.

This area has subway riders, buses, deliveries, double-parking, U-turns, and heavy pedestrian activity competing for limited space. Make Church westbound-only for general traffic, remove most parking, and dedicate the recovered curb space to actual transportation needs.

A radical suggestion: study Church Avenue and Caton Avenue as a one-way pair. Instead of continuing to fix the same congestion, double-parking, U-turn, turning, bus and pedestrian conflicts one intersection at a time, why not simplify the entire street network? From the Prospect Expressway/Ocean Parkway area to Bedford Avenue/Linden Boulevard, make Church Avenue one-way westbound for general traffic and Caton Avenue one-way eastbound. Remove most general curb parking and use that space for dedicated loading zones, bus priority, safer crossings, daylighting and protected bike infrastructure. Eliminate left turns at selected high-conflict intersections where they routinely block traffic or endanger pedestrians. This should not mean turning either street into a high-speed two-lane roadway. The goal should be fewer conflicting movements and a much more predictable street. The B35 should remain a priority, potentially retaining two-way operation on Church with an eastbound bus-only lane. This idea isn't completely out of left field: NYC DOT previously studied converting Church Avenue to one-way westbound. One reason it wasn't pursued was the lack of a suitable parallel eastbound street. Why not revisit that study and explicitly evaluate Caton as the eastbound half of the pair?

This stretch of Flatbush—particularly the west side—is notorious for double parking. It’s always full of people just sitting in their cars, hanging out.

Another vote for fixing the drainage issue here. Huge pools of water collect every time it rains, forcing pedestrians into the street. It's especially dangerous for wheelchair users and people with strollers.
