All vehicles (except buses) are required to turn left off to Fulton Mall onto Albee Sq W, but poor/little signage doesn't make this clear enough so private vehicles constantly continue straight, clogging the bus corridor.
I was trying to cross Adams Street from the Post Office side to the corner of City Tech. Buses turning and a large number of cars trying to make the left onto adams Street made it hard for me. I went anyway. If I wait for all the vehicles to pass the light would have changed and I would have to stand until the next one. At my age,75 years old, that's not easy. The busway may benefit the bikers and bus riders but it is hell on us pedestrians.
The left turn from Adams St onto the Fulton Mall Busway has just ONE sign indicating that it is for buses only. Private vehicles constantly make this turn into the busway due to the lack of signage. The turn lane should be painted red (as the Flatbush Ext turn onto Myrtle Ave is) and the left turn signal should be a bus signal, not a traditional left turn arrow.
Coming down the bike lane on Tillary St and making a left turn onto Jay St toward the bridge, it feels dangerous with cars turning right and possibly not yielding. The other day I was hit by a car in a similar intersection coming from Clinton St onto Tillary as a car was turning onto Cadman Plaza West.
Pedestrians crossing at or near Myrtle often do not use crosswalk. They cross between cars and it is difficult as a cyclist to see them and also try to avoid the buses and cars. Pedestrians should be given much more width to cross, since that appears to be their desire . Parking should not be allowed in the vicinity of Myrtle so as to maximize sight lines and decrease conflict.
Cars, mostly NYPD it would seem, are constantly parked in the bike lane. There is usually more bike lane blocked than open on this stretch of Schermerhorn. It is a severe safety hazard, particularly where construction is happening (where cars are typically blocking the whole car lane pushing all traffic in both directions into a single lane) and someone is going to get hurt. I hope it doesn't take a death to get this issue addressed.
I'm a commuter cyclist and want to commend you for the busway implementation. It has made riding on Jay Street feel safer and allows for faster travel by not getting stuck behind vehicles. A danger still persists and that is pedestrians waiting to cross Jay Street from within the bike lane or crossing outside of the crosswalks and popping out from behind parked cars into the bike lane. Is there signage or added awareness for peds to stay out of the bike lane?
Non-emergency vehicles belonging to the FDNY HQ park on the full sidewalk with metal barriers laid out parallel to Flatbush Ave severely restricting pedestrian access to the Metrotech area. This illegal blocking of pedestrian space hinders transit users access to the Jay St. busway.
DOT has the public and elected official's support on this busway. Leaving placard parking for Court Officers on one side of Jay St. on the busway will incentivize bus lane obstruction. The busway is half a mile long, please commit to keeping it free of all potential obstructions so that your hard work in bringing this to the public can be fully realized through quicker transit times for thousands of riders.
