Conversations with bus riders on Pennsylvania Avenue

The South Brooklyn SBS team was back out on the B82 corridor on Wednesday, September 16, this time at Pennsylvania Avenue and Schroeders Avenue. The team spent the afternoon talking with local residents, workers, students, and other bus riders about the South Brooklyn SBS project and what could be done to improve bus service. Some of the mostly frequently mentioned issues with B82 service were:

  • Buses run very late and you have to wait a long time for the bus;
  • The service is not frequent enough, particularly at night;
  • Buses are too crowded; and
  • There is a need for more bus service to Gateway Center Mall.

Most conversations with bus riders revolved around B82 limited and local service, but the B83 was also brought up frequently as a route that could use improvement. The most common issues with the B83 were that the bus doesn’t arrive on time and that more frequent service is needed both during rush hours and at night.

We heard from a few hundred people about how to make bus service better along Pennsylvania Avenue. Students from Fredrick Douglass Academy VIII Middle School and P.S. 346 Abe Stark were eager to participate and shared some great ideas with us after school. While we can't implement all of the ideas that came up (free snacks and music on the bus were popular ideas with the kids!), many improvements were mentioned that we can achieve through Select Bus Service. The image above is a word cloud that shows the many suggestions we received. Comments that we heard more frequently appear in larger fonts, and comments that were less frequent appear in smaller fonts.

We will continue to visit bus stops throughout September and October, so keep an eye out for us tabling at a bus stop near you. In the meantime, please visit our B82 Feedback Map and B6 Feedback Map to provide comments about the B82 and B6 bus routes.
