The Department of Transportation pursued a comprehensive safety redesign of Northern Boulevard between Queens Plaza and 114 Street. Northern Boulevard is a Vision Zero Priority Corridor with Priority Intersections at 80 St, 87 St, and 102 St. The corridor passes through the Jackson Heights and Corona-Elmhurst Senior Pedestrian Focus Areas.

Between 2012 and 2016, 13 people have been killed on the 4.3 mile corridor and 1086 pedestrian, bicyclist, and vehicle occupant injuries.

DOT has previously installed safety improvements on Northern Boulevard in Woodside, Sunnyside, Jackson Heights, and Corona.
