Shared lane is not enough to discourage cars from speeding, especially on Classon Ave where drivers are rushing and speeding to get on Atlantic Avenue, making turns on Dean and Bergen Streets increasingly unsafe. I would like to see a protected lane in these two corridors
I purchased a condo on Bergen Street partially because of the bus stops along Bergen and Dean. Please do not reroute those!
In other areas of NYC with bike boulevards, I have been hit by bikers going the wrong way and generally ignoring traffic safety laws. So have my elderly relatives. Very scared for what a bike boulevard would mean for pedestrian safety without substantial changes in traffic law/safety enforcement.
This industrial zone is slowly becoming residential. Riding during sunrise and sunset hours can be dangerous when there is intense glare and little cover from the sun. I suggest planting more trees in this area - especially in this stretch on Bergen street particularly between Franklin and Washington Avenues but more trees would improve visibility for both east/west corridors.
I am concerned that taking away any parking spots will cause a knock-on effect for the entire neighborhood in which spots become too difficult and competitive to find. Further, I want to ensure that my neighbors have the ability to unload groceries, get a cab to the airport with heavy suitcases, etc. Please do not shut down driving on Dean!
Dean and Bergen would greatly benefit from protected bike lanes. Franklin Ave sees high traffic at these two junctures - even as a south bound only, one-way street. Frustrated drivers on Atlantic Ave frequent Dean and Bergen streets to avoid traffic and they often speed on these streets without consequence. With the addition of e-bikes from the food delivery trend post-COVID, turns at Dean and Bergen are increasingly dangerous, especially since Dean and Bergen Streets, and Franklin Ave are not marked properly to guide pedestrians and cyclists safely. We need to reclaim and finally prioritize the streets in these residential neighborhoods for pedestrian and cycling use over cars.
Dangerous for pedestrians and bikers
Very excited for Bergen and dean to get bike lane protection! The existing painted lanes mean nothing to most cars, who have no problem idling, unloading, and weaving into them without notice. Also the NE corner of dean and smith is a notorious area for delivery trucks to park and unload—completely obstructing the bike lane and sometimes the crosswalk.
This is just such a bad idea for our block. This is a quiet, residential neighborhood with lots of kids. The vast majority of bikers respect traffic laws, but you are going to create a major safety hazard with even more bikes zooming past, jumping curbs, and many e-bikes not respecting speed limits. Please don’t ruin our neighborhood with this plan. Just paint the existing Dean Street bike lane green to be more noticeable, that’s it. Don’t disrupt our parking, children’s safety, or quiet neighborhood!!
