Double parked cars in this commercial strip force us to take the lane. For the most part, drivers are considerate about it, but it still comes with increased risk when we have to exit the bike lane into the car lane.
The illegal parking here -- by the fast food restaurants across from Barclay Center around the 5th, Atlantic, Dean intersections -- is absolutely nuts and creates danger for bikers, pedestrians and drivers. Make sure that the plans account for this both by creating places for these parkers to go and/or enforcing rules against illegal parking.
This is a very popular Citi Bike rack (b/c it's the best one serving the target/movies/grocers/TJ/Dekalb market) but is very hard to bike to safely to from points south, which is where this bike boulevard will be. Create protected biking routes that would make it easy to access the Fulton/Bond/Albee citibike from the new bike boulevard please!
Bond/Livingston and Bond/Schermerhorn are constant gridlock -- the two Bond St dead ends facing each other inhibits traffic flow
This lane will put a lot of extra pressure on Bond St which is a mess. Both cars and bikes changing directions every other block is confusing for all. Add to that the chaotic illegal parking + constant gridlock and it's miserable. Make this a two-way bike lane, take out parking. (Potentially reduce the extra-wide sidewalk which is being used as a street bazaar of things that people thought they were giving to Goodwill?)
You could pay for all of this by ticketing everyone who abuses the Atlantic Av exit lane then drives on the shoulder of the BQE northbound. So many people do it that you can see people doing it even in the Google Maps shot. A camera issuing $100 tickets here would take in more than all of congestion pricing does.
DOT has already made parking way more difficult in this area by installing meters for spaces on the side streets off of court st, limiting parking spaces for those of us who actually live on these side streets. Many of us who live here need our cars for daily commutes. Please consider the drivers of this neighborhood while implementing this project - the streets can be made safer for bikers without taking away significant street parking.
I think it's important that bikes have dedicated car-free space like on Berry street, or a two-way protected bike lane. I think the current boulevard on Underhill is difficult since you're fighting with traffic, and the one-way protected lane on Court is great but incentivizes salmoning since there's no northbound route.
