The extra wide (40'–42') segment of Bergen from Classon to Carlton should get a protected bike lane.
Bergen is 40' wide from Smith to Court. There are buffer zones on both sides of the street. More than wide enough for a protected bike lane.
Hi. My name is Kirsten Danis, and I live at 420 Dean Street, a two-family home I own with my husband. I am writing about the proposal to turn Bergen and Dean Streets into bike boulevards. I'm also a biker. There are several important considerations for designers and the city. 1) Bikers along these routes, especially along Bergen Street in the morning, often do not respect traffic laws. They barrel through red lights at intersections (I am near Dean & Bergen and 5th Avenues). I myself have been hit or nearly hit by bikers who treat these streets as open lanes instead of roads governed by laws. Our block closings are a stark example of how these safe street agendas are clashing: Bikers ignore closure signs and race down the streets, endangering children. 2) These are heavy residential streets that often get deliveries of large items and services that require trucks, or have elderly or young children who need to be picked up near their homes. There needs to be room in any design for these to happen and not to penalize the thousands of people who live on these blocks. 3) There is a fire station on Dean Street between Flatbush and 6th Avenue, and trucks use Dean and Bergen to respond. That also needs to be considered in any design. Thank you
I love this initiative as a homeowner on Brooklyn who uses a bicycle instead of a car to get around. But I am also my block Association president. I know there will be pushed back from Neighbors about the impact to parking. I don't see this point address in the city's information about the new project or the news coverage. This seems a perfect opportunity to introduce residential parking permits. Gentrification in the neighborhood has already made parking competition much worse for long time residents I am sure there will be an outcry
Recently a speed camera was installed outside my apartment on Bergen street, and the flash goes off continuously. Cars currently see Bergen and Dean as speedy alternatives to Atlantic Ave. These streets need to be reclaimed for the pedestrians who walk them, and for the cyclists who use them to get to work. Cars can go on the main artery (Atlantic Ave)
This project needs to be nullified mainly because it's based on influence peddling corruption and cronyism because of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's extremely close relationship with the lobbyists from Transportation Alternatives and StreetsPac who live in this neighborhood and have a critical mass bike ride on occasion and it's obvious the Mayor has ordered this street redesign for them just like the multiple other bike lane proposals and the anti-car Grand Army Plaza project that will cause more traffic congestion. Also, two way bike lanes have led to the death of two women by ebikes. This project needs to be abolished and DOT commissioner Mike Flynn should resign for even trying to force this on the community
We really need some protection on Bedford Avenue. I try to bike with my kids to Prospect Park and this stretch is so scary I have them bike on the sidewalks but the sidewalks are SUPER narrow on this Avenue and they are often encountering pedestrians/ strollers etc. There really doesn't feel like a safe way - and we live just a mile from the park!
This is a terrible idea. What have you learned from open streets and pedestrian safety? What have you learned from the bike lanes in prospect park? Nothing! The cyclists think they rule the road. They don't abide by rules at all. Many cyclists don't even know how to ride in traffic. It's dangerous for pedestrians. I had a cyclist almost hit my stroller the other day on the corner of Washington and St Johns.
Please do not expand to a "bike boulevard." There are already two bus lines going down this block, as well as trucks. Bicyclists coming down this street do not obey traffic signals and speed so quickly, it's impossible to open a car door or cross the street at the corners. This is a residential street already overwhelmed by bike traffic, bus traffic, and car traffic. Don't add more!
I support the addition of protected bike lanes. Make the city people first, not car first. I trust the administration to make effective changes to current bus routes so that buses continue to run smoothly.
