Illegal parking of personal police vehicles (also encouraging others to do the same) blocks turning lane onto Columbus; with consequent traffic back-ups (polluting and noisy) on 81st street (already a problematic, narrow, residential, one-lane, bus-route street for all cross-town traffic)
Between W 81 and W 83 on Columbus, police & shop owners double park in dedicated turn lanes and on the street, impeding street cleaning and traffic flow. Fire trucks, ambulances and police cars get trapped when Columbus Av bottlenecks. The police park at hydrants all the way up the Columbus corridor, and its side streets, from 81st to 83. Unnecessary noise ensues.
Double parking on both sides of Columbus from W 81st to w 83 causes three lanes to turn into one. Solution: Remove restaurant sheds in this area.
Police and shop vehicles park on dedicated left turn lanes at this corner and the corner at W 81st. This is a cause of bottlenecking up Columbus from W 81 to W 84th. Solution: paint lines and curb yellow and ticket.
Police and shop vehicles park in the dedicated left turn lane. This, combined with the double parking from W 81st to W 83, creates a Columbus Av bottleneck all the way to W 84th that traps emergency responders, like ambulances and precinct's vehicles. As a result, sirens blare and it's deafening. Solution: Paint striped lines yellow. Ticket these vehicles.
There are two hydrants on this corner (one on W 81st, the other on Columbus). Police routinely park precinct and personal vehicles at them. If there were a fire, moving the vehicles would delay response-time. Solution: Create more dedicated parking spaces for the precinct throughout the neighborhood.
Police routinely park their personal vehicles in the right turn lane, encouraging others to do the same. When blocked, two lanes become one and traffic backs up, delaying flow and buses. Solution: Paint the curb yellow all the way to Columbus Av, including the lines up to the ASP sign, and install barriers on the lines to prevent parking.
This crosstown block and every other one needs at least two short-term parking zones for delivery trucks and other short-term uses. Double-parking is the only alternative, blocking other street users, including emergency vehicles.
Frequent illegal parking in bus stop/bike lane by tour buses and ice cream trucks
