Bike lane is regularly blocked by tour buses, city buses, illegally parked cars or police cars. It is dangerous to pull bikes have to pull onto the main road to pass. A biker died doing this in the past.
Oncoming left turners and high bike traffic make the crossing difficult. Additionally the curb is missing the accessibility ramp.
So little short term parking combined with the double parking, bus lane, bike lane, and restaurant sheds has created the perfect storm for the worst, and unnecessary, congestion, traffic, and nonstop noise pollution ALL DAY LONG. It’s a highly frequent occurrence that emergency vehicles are significantly slowed down, or often stopped, when in an emergency situation. There should be a study on the response time of emergency vehicles between the day they took out one lane for bikes and now, when there is quite often ONE lane open on Amsterdam.
The new(ish) cement islands added to the northwest and southwest points of 80th Street have eliminated a temporary pick up and drop off option where so few options already existed.
Our side streets are among thr most beautiful in the world but they are marred by rows of parked cars which suck the life out our community. I would love to see a car-free stretch on a side street with parklets, seating and other amenities. The community enjoying our neighborhood space would make a great image for the pilot program and for our city.
The roots of old trees are coming through the concrete from 2nd Avenue and 1st Avenue on East 124 Street.
Please increase or use residential parking permits for residents who own and need cars for their jobs and cannot afford to be in a garage. I have an electric car I use to commute and I am happy to have charging areas but I think those areas in Riverside that have started to be developed with solar panels for charging could be opened for commuters and garages can have more "pay to charge" spaces rather than taking up curb spaces from residents. In addition, using curb tools to provide private business like shared cars, private bike companies (Citi bike) and other private businesses (Amazon deliveries) at the expense of residential parking seems to be putting private business ahead of public good.
Please please please please consider Residential Parking Permits. I will totally pay for that (as longs as it's not $600 like parking garages charge). I NEED my car for my job. I literally cannot get to work without it as there is no public transport to the area I work in NJ. With Congestion pricing, these areas that you are now proposing things to remove even MORE parking spaces, will soon be inundated with twice as many cars from non-residents who cannot afford to pay the congestion price and will need to park in our neighborhood to catch public transit. Everyone talks about London and congestion pricing working etc, but they also have Residential Parking Permits to help ease the pain to the overflow neighborhoods. Why is it so hard to see the big picture?
NONE of the areas reserved for Short Term Parking for unloading/loading are EVER used! I have seen those spaces sit empty all day, while a truck is double parked in a very busy main street, just a car length away! The signs say these spots are for load/unload and ride share pickup. I have yet to see ANYONE use ANY of these spots for those purposes. People are too freaking lazy to walk a few car lengths to get their uber, park their cab to go pee, or to load/unload a truck. These spaces should be turned into residential parking permit spaces.
Demarcate each parking spot clearly with white lines. Why: every block loses at least one or two parking spots because people leave too much or too little space around their car. Install sensors in every parking spot and connect it to an app that tells drivers which spots are open and are appropriate for their needs (hours, duration, cost, type of vehicle etc). Why: Too many cars have to keep driving around looking for a spot and trying to decipher what rules apply, creating unnecessary slow traffic. Traffic rules should be more rigorously enforced, leveraging cameras and sensors where need be to automatically bill people for breaking the rules like blocking the box, double parking etc. NY state should work nationally to have all license plates embeded some kind of RFID tag that allows traffic police to identify vehicles remotely. Why: drivers act with only their own self-interest in mind if there are no consequences for their antisocial behavior. There aren’t enough traffic wardens to be able to address all important violations, but technology can make that easy.
