Crowded Sidewalk
Crowded Sidewalk
Broadway - West 74 St - West 75 St

Many vendors and folks loading cars with groceries. It's a pretty crowded sidewalk despite being decently wide. Loading grocery problem made worse by the double and triple parking that is happening. And on 74th, many drivers taking up spots just idling their vehicle. It would be nicer if the space was less crowded and fewer vehicles idling and polluting the air. Maybe convert more of the space to short term loading and add more enforcement for these types of curbs, at least until drivers adjust.

The smart curbs program should need to include a resident parking program in order to be enacted. Not fair to suddenly say that taxpayers can no longer street park.

You can follow https://twitter.com/20th_parking to get a few pics of illegally parked cars. What can we do about that?

Despite a citibike rack and a no standing sign, cars park/stand often illegally in the area. In particular when they need to pick up kids from school.

Private cars are parked illegally in the bus lane. They often seem to have a police badge/vest visible, so it should be easy to figure who they are.

Semis trucks are often illegally parked on the bike lane. They seem to be unloading/loading equipment for the beacon theater. Beacon theater needs a loading/unloading zone that doesn't block the bike lane.

Please do not eliminate any long-term parking spaces. Residents should be prioritized with a permit parking system, if possible. Remember that any time you hear someone refer to parking as "private car storage", they are just parroting propoganda buzzwords from the anti-car lobby (i.e., Transportation Alternatives and Open Plans). UWS already lost 400 parking spaces on CPW in 2019 (when a parking-protected bike lane could have easily accommodated) and countless others. Sadly, I am worried that the fix is in, and despite the overwhelming comments in support of residential parking, the DOT will make these changes because they feel that you do not deserve to own a car. And I say this as someone who has biked over 5,000 miles in this city and commutes to midtown by bike every day. There needs to be compromise. I welcome changes along main streets like Amsterdam, Broadway, and Columbus but side streets should be left alone so middle-class families who depend on cars for trips outside of the city (and can't afford a $1,000 per month parking space in a garage) can afford to stay here.

Re: the proposed pilot plan to reduce on-street parking space for the Upper West Side: Residential parking requirements with reasonable fees (see London's tariffs which charge according to CO2 emissions, starting at approximately $190 per year for autos with the lowest emissions) would at least give middle-class car owners (many of whom are seniors) the chance to pay for the on-street parking they need. Note that monthly parking in private lots in London is easily as expensive as monthly parking rates in Manhattan -- far beyond what middle-class residents can afford. Too much of the city has already been given over to the wealthy. Asking us to pay reasonable fees for on-street parking is rational and ethical. Taking away parking when middle-class residents have no alternative is another way of alienating those who can't afford two-million-dollar condos with on-site parking. Much parking space on the UWS is already taken up by permitted parkers who are NOT local residents. On 85th between Columbus and Amsterdam, during weekdays, something like 40-50% of cars park for free with permits for employees of Brandies High School -- i.e., teachers and staff. What will happen with even less space for on-street parking? Who will turn against whom? We need a rational plan that values the middle-class, not a plan that will encourage intra-class division.

I feel that if police parking is an issue in the community that there should be parking spaces reserved in the community for police officers. I notice that the 20th PCT has far less parking spaces available for both police and private vehicles despite being comparable in size to other precincts citywide. In addition, the NYCDOT can consider providing offices and other public employees vouchers to park in private parking garages.

I feel like the CPW bike lane along with all protected bike lanes should be parking protected to ensure parking in the area while providing safe spaces for cyclists to ride. However, in this specific area, I feel that a curb spaces specifically for street vendors could be helpful to increase sidewalk space.
