DO NOT change this street - it is a vital connector from northern Brooklyn to Long Island City and beyond. This is absurd, there are plenty of bike lanes on side streets. This street needs to remain for use as intended, as a thoroughfare connected to a vital bridge and highway. Bikes are not a all-weather, all-season, all-ages, all-sorts of cargo form of transportation. This will be detrimental to all the surrounding residents for the sake of a hipster agenda.
Getting rid of two lanes of traffic will do nothing but cause excess amounts of traffic buildup on McGuinness. Resides that have lived on McGuinness have never complained about the dangers of the blvd for decades and expanding sidewalks is just a waste of money. Why can't cyclists bike on the sidewalk so they can be out of the way. You aren't allowed to speak during the workshops because the organizers censor opposing comments and berate opposing views on social media but claim the whole neighborhood agrees with them. Cyclists weave in and out of traffic, never signal when turning, do not follow traffic rules, or stop for lights themselves. Cyclists should be forced to register their bikes as vehicles so that they can be ticketed just like drivers.
Consider enforcing the 'No Thru Truck Traffic' sign on Manhattan and Green St. please
Making Mcguinnes one lane each way would only exacerbate traffic in both directions and drive commercial vehicles onto quiet and adjacent side streets such as Newel and Diamond to the north and Lorimer to the south. Not every street needs to be “bikeable” and some arteries are vital for commerce. Speed cameras would be a cheaper and more effective option and automatically reduce speeders. Look at Ocean Parkway for example.
there is so much traffic on this small street due to people coming from either the BQE or McGuiness and they speed through making a dangerous street instead of being forced to Meeker or Graham where they have larger two-way streets. There are few stop signs and so there is speeding and its very dangerous to cross. There are just too many cars for a small street. Closing the crossing at Meeker or forcing the traffic off the offramp to go to Meeker would be more sensible.
Not enough parking for residents who have lived here for decades. Bikers don't pay attention to the cars and bike recklessly. While the cars are turning from McGuinness pedestrians and bikers start crossing which is dangerous.
Mcguiness Blvd should not be a four to six lane road. It should be a one lane road in each direction with a left turn lane. There is almost never significant traffic on this road and the unnecessarily wide road cuts off the area east of mcguiness from the rest of the neighborhood of greenpoint. This is a wasted opportunity and caters to cars over our neighbors and businesses. There should be a reduction in the width of mcguiness & introductions of protected bike lanes that connect with the protected bike path over the Pulaski bridge.
Would want a bike lane on McGuiness only if it was truly a protected lane. Would not ride on a bike lane here if it was just a painted lane
Tricky crossing here for pedestrians; would be nice if the curb between Herbert and the off-ramp extended into the crosswalk to offer ped refuge
Cars often don't yield to pedestrians at this crosswalk
