The DOT wants to make McGuinness Boulevard a one lane street in order to accommodate bicyclists with a bike lane. However, this project is harmful to all involved. Bicyclists ride however they want in the streets and don't even adhere to the bike lane. They don't look out for cars and therefore many collisions are bound to occur. Traffic is already a problem on McGuinness particularly in the morning and in the late afternoon. Shrinking the street to one lane will only cause traffic to worsen and many complaints to be filed. All that traffic causes more emissions and pollution to enter the air which effects everyone in the Greenpoint community, most importantly with schools being located right off of McGuinness this will effect children as well. I just think it's a terrible idea and is not going to benefit anyone. How about coming up with consequences for bicyclists that don't follow the rules of the road first before gifting them their own lane. As a matter of fact, there should be bicycle licenses in order to ride a bike in the street. You need a license to operate a car in the street, it's the same nonsense put more responsibility on bicyclists too.
The very difficult truth is that we are killing each other and the planet with cars. And we have been left on our own with no one in power to lead. There's billions to be made selling cars - gas AND electric, so it is easy for those who stand to gain to do nothing. We are in the crisis right now. Every street - millions of acres of public space - has been surrendered to cars. We are past time for a gradual decline of cars (which will not happen). We need drastic, and dramatic improvements to pedestrian and public transit. I think McGuinness could be a small but significant step in that direction. We should be asking that the entire city be free from cars. Instead we are asking for a lane or two on one road to be removed. It's more than fair - I suspect our children will think it was a foolishly lopsided concession to cars, trucks, and SUVs. I appreciate hearing from all the members of this wonderful community and wish them and their loved ones well.
Cars and trucks fly through here.
This street is incredibly dangerous - cars and huge trucks are speeding down Driggs from the BQE - kids walk to school and there is a bike lane. EVERY DAY I see dangerous drivers. Please help.
cars are constantly driving through the stop signs at this intersection. It is very dangerous, especially in the evening/night. This is a very residential area with lots of small children and elderly folks
Nassau ave shared bike lane is very sketchy. There are a lot of double parked cars and trucks and the bike is a 'shared' lane. It would be great to have a designated bike lane, a parallel to Driggs going north, maybe make nassau one way and direct 2 way traffic w/o bike lane to norman?
Comment Comment. Test.
I cross McGuiness every day. I feel safe because I wait for the light and look both ways. But all I see are bikes that don't stop and pedestrians sprinting. It's the only street in our neighborhood (other than Manhattan Ave) that you really have to stop and pay attention. People blame the street, not themselves, for being unsafe!
