Uncomfortable for Novice Cyclists
Uncomfortable for Novice Cyclists
Mcguinness Boulevard - Freeman St - Pulaski Bridge

Incredibly difficult space for cycling. Cars drive way too fast, bike lane across Pulaski is only accessible from one side of the street, and motorized vehicles drive into the bike lane constantly.

Mcguinness Boulevard - Pulaski Bridge Bike Path - Dupont St

Entering the Pulaski bridge from Eagle Street (which seems to be where you're -supposed- to enter the Pulaski bridge) is outright confusing. The intersection involves sharp turns and conflicting vehicles from several streets. It's even more confusing when I'm trying to access the citibike station on this block, as I have to ride against traffic.

What I think McGuinness needs is a lot of green space. I'm not opposed to protected bike lanes, but I'd feel scared to cycle up and down McGuinness given its history. Let's narrow and remove automobile lanes and put in trees and other greenery that will deal with stormwater runoff! During storms, parts of McGuinness and intersecting streets get absolutely flooded! Everyone in the neighborhood loves greenery, and it will help us stay cool in the summer and sheltered from the rain.

I regularly see cars and trucks speeding down this part of McGuinness (crossing Norman) where there's a school. Is there a speed camera here? Can we please place a speed camera here?

One thing that would help the backup of eastbound Nassau traffic leading into McGuinness would be loading zones. Double parking, especially by trucks, is rampant on Nassau, and nobody is happy! Getting rid of a few parking spots so traffic becomes a bit more normal would help.

Nassau Ave - Eckford St - Mcguinness Boulevard

Eastbound traffic here (Nassau and McGuinness) backs up several blocks, often with large trucks, and often blocking intersections until traffic cops show up. For cyclists, the choice is either to wait behind this multi-block wall for several traffic cycles, or to squeeze between the stopped cars and the parked cars. I'm not sure what the best solution is–perhaps diversions or a bike lane or making this part of Nassau one-way.

Meserole Ave - Mcguinness Boulevard - Newel St

Drivers waiting for the light on Meserole often speed quickly to turn onto McGuinness. Please install traffic calming devices (e.g. raised sidewalks) or other infrastructure to slow vehicle traffic. I see residents in wheelchairs, pushing carts, etc. are frequently intimidated by large vehicles trying to turn into the pedestrian walkway, even though pedestrians have the crossing light.

The flexi-post toothpick delineators are not protection. No cyclist feels safe because of them. They are delineators, not protection. They should never be used in a street "safety" project. Use real protection. Climate change is real, and we don't have years for your slow and ineffective processes. Act like there is some urgency to saving lives and reducing emissions and get it done.

McGuinness is a speedway. There needs to be an immediate road diet, using global best practices to reduce speed and conflict. Other cities have figured this out years ago but DOT thinks NYC is so different and special we need a year long planning process to save lives. Reduce lanes, increase turning radius, add bulbouts, daylight intersections, add bollards, add truly safe bike infrastructure. The fact that these actions aren't ready to go and deployed immediately says everything about how incompetent and car-centric this department is. You don't need to turn the community into volunteer urban planners- you need to do your job. Lives depend on it, and you are failing miserably.
