Project Overview

One-way conversion study area map shows streets surrounding Grand St and Metropolitan Ave from Union Ave to Metropolitan Ave Bridge.
One-Way Conversion Study Area Map

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is studying the feasibility of converting Grand St and Metropolitan Ave to one-way streets between Union Ave and the Metropolitan Ave Bridge.

Both corridors are currently two-way streets, with one travel lane in each direction. The conversions that are being explored are as follows:

  • Conversion of Grand Street to one-way eastbound
  • Conversion of Metropolitan Ave to one-way westbound

Why is NYC DOT studying a one-way conversion of Grand St and Metropolitan Ave?

Community input is central to why NYC DOT is studying this change.

NYC DOT seeks to address ongoing community concerns around pedestrian safety, parking and loading challenges, blocked bike lanes, and slow bus speeds on Grand St

  • The outcome of a public workshop and subsequent stakeholder conversations resulted in a request to further study a one-way conversion of Grand St, coupled with Metropolitan Ave.
  • Grand Street is not wide enough to accommodate improvements across every area of community concern. Converting both Grand St and nearby Metropolitan Ave to one-way streets could reduce competition for the roadway and curb, decrease conflicts and improve traffic flow, benefitting all road users.
  • NYC DOT has since untaken a preliminary analysis and looks forward to developing design proposals guided by community input.

What are the benefits of one-way conversions?

A one-way conversion is turning a two-way street into a one-way street. Converting both Grand St and Metropolitan Ave to one-way streets could result in benefits for all road users.

  • Simpler traffic patterns may reduce turning conflicts and improve visibility between pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.
  • More space to dedicate to bike infrastructure, bus priority, parking and loading, sidewalk extensions
  • Potential for increased vehicle throughput and safer turns via signal timing changes.

What are some trade-offs that need to be considered?

One-way conversions require a redesign of Grand St and Metropolitan Ave that will impact the neighborhood transportation network. The following impacts must be weighed with the benefits:

  • Bus service reroutes and bus stop relocations
  • Vehicle and bicycle circulation changes
  • Changes to curb regulations that impact parking and loading

We want to hear from you!

NYC DOT is seeking public input to understand how a one-way conversion of Grand St and Metropolitan Ave could impact the community. This feedback will be used to generate design proposals.

  • How do you use the Grand St and Metropolitan Ave corridors?
  • What are issues you are experiencing? Are there opportunities for improvement?
  • What would you like to see featured in a redesign of Grand St and Metropolitan Ave?
