Washington Bridge needs bus lanes throughout in both directions.
A Busway prioritizes buses and trucks on 181st Street. Vehicles that aren't trucks and buses must make the next available turn off of 181st Street.
181st Street is an important corridor for buses, with 5 MTA routes that carry over 42,000 daily riders. Bus passengers comprise over 62% of roadway users on 181st Street. During peak times, buses come almost once a minute.
Buses move an average of 3.7 mph on the corridor. Besides slow buses, buses often arrived "bunched," which causes long waits and overcrowding.
Tell us about transit, traffic, and pedestrian safety issues on 181st Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue and the surrounding streets (178th Street to 184th Street). Comments should be made in the map below and/or via our online survey. Comments should relate to the Busway treatment or other improvements that you would like to see included in the project.

This corner is very crowded. busses dont pull up all the wya to the curb
This busway is long overdue. The corridor is heavily used by bus riders during all hours of the day, and the hours of the lanes should ideally be 24/7, but should at least be from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. to serve people with unconventional work hours.
