NYC DOT Celebrates Completion of Washington Bridge Roadway Redesign, Critical Link in Future Harlem River Greenway

Two cyclists ride on new Washington Bridge protected bike lane.

Pedestrians, drivers, bus riders, and cyclists alike can now cross the Washington Bridge more safely and efficiently thanks to the completion of NYC DOT’s transformative project connecting Manhattan and the Bronx. The project— which spans from Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan to University Avenue in the Bronx—includes a redesign of the intersection leading up to the bridge approach, a new bus lane, and a two-way barrier-protected bike lane. The route is used by an average of 68,000 bus riders and 900 cyclists daily.

NYC DOT will continue to build connections to the George Washington Bridge and integrate this new project into the Harlem River Greenway, which will be a continuous 7-mile route on the Bronx side of the Harlem River from Van Cortlandt Park to Randall’s Island. While the Greenway’s ultimate route is still being finalized, the plan prioritizes bridge connections. Like the Washington Bridge project, the Greenway aims to create safe, sustainable, and efficient transportation options that allow all road users to share our streets with confidence.
