Van Cortlandt Park South & Bailey Avenue Project in Progress

Three cyclists enter Van Cortlandt Park.

Improvements are underway to make access to Van Cortlandt Park’s southern entrance safer and more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists alike. A first round of implementation this fall will reconstruct the eastern sidewalk and pedestrian island followed by further improvements next year. In all, the project will improve pedestrian infrastructure, create shorter and safer crossings, reduce pedestrian and bicyclists conflicts, and stop and slow vehicles entering or exiting the expressway.

The project also constitutes a critical link in the Bronx’ bike and greenway network. Once completed, the two-way path will more safely create connections to the Empire State Trail, Harlem River-Putnam Greenway, and Mosholu-Pelham Greenway. This popular biking and walking route marks the northern terminus of the ongoing Harlem River Greenway planning process, which aims to provide a continuous two-way cycling and pedestrian path from Van Cortlandt Park to Randall’s Island.
