On February 17, 2016, NYC DOT will be presenting its proposal for the first phase of the Bushwick bike network to Community Board 4 at Hope Gardens Multi Services Center at 195 Linden Street. The presentation will detail the proposal and outline how NYC DOT determined this plan based on an extensive outreach and community planning process. CB4 begins their monthly meetings at 6:30pm.
NYC DOT joined neighborhood organizations, agencies, and elected officials from Bushwick and Williamsburg in a parade down Knickerbocker Ave followed by a community resource fair and celebration in Maria Hernandez Park. NYC DOT representatives providing the public with information about biking laws in New York City, as well as resources like bike maps and BikeSmart guides.
NYC DOT representatives led a lesson about bike planning with students from El Puente Bushwick Leadership Center on Central Ave. After providing students with an overview of how planning design bike networks throughout New York City, students broke into groups where they used paper cut-outs to create their own street grids and bike paths, lanes, and shared ways. The lesson provided students with some insight into the challenges and opportunities planners face in creating safer, more equitable streets throughout the city.

They informed attendees about the ongoing process to plan a community bike network for Bushwick and elicited their feedback on current biking and street conditions throughout the neighborhood. This input will be incorporated into the planning process for a neighborhood bike network.

NYC DOT held its second community workshop at the Silent Barn on Bushwick Ave on May 9th, 2015. Attendees participated by idenitfying difficult streets and intersections for biking and proposing their own community bike network. Representatives from NYC DOT and the offices of Councilmembers Espinal and Reynoso visited the Puerto Rican Schwinn Club, a bike-enthusiast social group that's called Bushwick home since the 1970's, to involve their members in the process to improve the cycling network in the neighborhood.
Representatives from NYC DOT and the office of Councilmember Reynoso were out in full-force on Monday evening to administer surveys in-person with residents and commuters around the Jefferson Street L station. The survey asks individuals to detail their experiences biking on Bushwick's streets.

NYC DOT representatives visited bike shops throughout the neighborhood to solicit their feedback and involve them in the outreach process. They had the chance to talk with staff members from Bushwick Bike Repair, Bushwick Bicycles, Bushwick Bike Shop, Harvest Cyclery, Terrific's Video & Bikes, and Velo Brooklyn.
